Although many people believe that creating art is like taking a vacation, professional artists throughout the centuries regularly take vacations away from their art, especially after finishing an intense body of work, or following a major exhibition.
Picasso and Calder used to vacation in Cap d’Antibes, France where they would offer their artwork in exchange for hotel accommodations. My good friend Brenda McMahon, a well-known ceramicist, would relax in the healing spring waters at the Roosevelt Baths in Saratoga, New York.
I have my favorite personal retreat as well. After a major exhibition, or when I need to get away to recharge my creativity, I travel to Soul Space in Greenwich, New York. Frequented by artists, writers and holistic healers, Soul Space is the perfect place for me to relax and soak up the energy of the rural landscape.
I stayed at Soul Space following my recent show…..and boy, did I need it! I must have been running on pure adrenaline because I found myself drifting off to sleep in the hammock on the porch, lulled by the birdsong, with the aroma of a tomato, garlic and basil pasta sauce that awaited me for dinner.
I’ll be exhibiting at Soul Space for my upcoming show during the Open Studios of Washington County in July.
But for now, I’m pampering my body and spirit so I can gear up for my next series of exhibitions.
