Getting Publicity - An Exciting New Service for Artists

Getting publicity can be one of the toughest tasks of a working professional artist. You might wait a long time for an art critic to miraculously “find” you and be inspired to write about your work. And once an exhibition is over, you might find that your gallery does little to manage your media presence throughout the remainder of the year.

So what’s an artist to do?

I’m excited to announce that I am making my publicity writing services available to artists in all mediums world-wide.

Several years ago, painter and art blogger Robert Genn wrote a fascinating article on Publicity for Artists. In the article he suggests that, rather than soliciting art critics, artists need to get storytellers to write about their work and offers a few tips on attracting the attention of journalists and bloggers.

People relate to stories more than intellectual art-speak or a long list of credentials. When they buy art, they buy the stories that go along with it, stories they can tell their family and friends as they show them the new painting in their living room. Stories expand and proliferate – they’re an artist’s best friend and marketing tool.

But not all artists are good writers and even if they are, there’s a sense of “not being able to see the forest for the trees” when it comes to writing about themselves for press releases or even bios. And most artists would rather be in their studios doing what they do best – creating their art.

As you know, I’ve been interviewing artists and including their stories here on Artful Vagabond. What most of you don’t know is that I’ve also been providing publicity support to individual artists who’ve approached me over the years through world-of-mouth referrals. I’ve updated bios and resumes, written press releases, strategized on publicity campaigns and branding and prepared press kits for magazines, newspapers, radio and art bloggers. But it’s not just about writing good copy. I interview each artist, sifting through their background and creative process, looking for stories.

  • I think that is a great idea and an important service. And, I agree that people buy art if there is a story that they like and can relate. At 70, I am too tired to fight with galleries to get my political satire seen. First, galleries do not want to offend their patrons and if they show my work they risk offending their best and well heeled clients. I enjoy being an outside artist. I enjoy working with wood and paint in producing what I do. Being retired and not having to worry about pleasing anyone with my art is the greatest freedom I know. Some day someone might find my work of interest, but most people want to look at a pretty picture.

    • Promoting “outsider” art, or art that challenges viewers, requires unique and innovative marketing that may or may not result in sales but is often selected over “pretty pictures” for museum exhibitions. You are indeed fortunate to be able to create the kind of work that moves you worrying about whether or not it will sell. Some artists are lucky enough to do both, while others create a more “marketable” series that pays the bills while they explore less commercial themes and mediums. No two artists are alike. The important thing is to get the work done – and to get it out so others can experience it.

  • Dear Serena
    I love the idea of helping outsider artist share their work with the rest of the world. I for one have been rejected by galleries and museums through out my career and that was like pouring gas on a creative fire inside me, so I created my own gallery and sculpture park museum. When I die I am leaving my number of guest books to the museums so they can read all the positive comments about my real art made with a real imagination from people all over this planet. My main objective in this life is not to gather up all the money I can but to enjoy my journey and share my creativity just like the caveman with the paintings on the cave walls. Free Spirit, Free Thinker and a Free American.

    • What a great story, Dan! I appreciate how you tried the “traditional route” of galleries and museums and decided to get your work out by creating your own museum so people can experience and enjoy your work! The reference to the Lascaux paintings is not lost on me…..the real roots of art are on those cave walls, long before the days of museums, galleries and art magazines. Art is part of life. Keep up the great work!

  • Hi Serena,
    I understood that you had looked at my work on my website and liked it. My story with painting is rather nice, all started when I said YES to a large commission while I did not know at all how I will achieve the work. It was in 2008, I have never stopped painting or thinking about painting since and have been quite successful. I recently won a place for MA painting at City & Guilds and should graduate for my 50th birthday!     Nice offer! Could work out very well.

    I am an artist new to the business (but not to the art) and mostly unknown. I can write, but would rather spend my hours with a brush in my hand.

    The key result that I need is the audience — buyers, critics, publishers, and galleries/resellers.

    How can you find me those? (Especially the $Buyers?)
