Six years ago, I co-founded an open studios tour for professional visual artists aimed at attracting buying visitors, rather than people who simply wander from studio to studio and say, “Isn’t that nice?”
It’s not the fault of the public – they are enthusiastic about discovering great artwork from living artists. There simply needs to be more awareness of how owning a piece of art, no matter how small, can be a life-enhancing experience.
For the Open Studios team, it is an ongoing process. We not only encourage the general public to seek out information on their favorite artists so they can truly appreciate the work and make an informed purchase, but we also brainstorm regularly with the participating artists to create a highly professional event, engaging the entire group of artists in the marketing process.
Ligaya Figueras interviewed me on how the Open Studios of Washington County maximizes their artwork sales and attracts qualified buyers. Read the entire interview in the November 2010 issue or by clicking: Art Calendar Interview
Art Calendar Magazine is a business magazine for visual artists. Visit their website at: www.ArtCalendar.com
The next Open Studios of Washington County will take place July 16 & 17, 2011 Â www.StudioTour.org

I would like my studio and gallery in Whitehall to be included in the 2011 Stdio tour. What do i have to do to participate?
Hello Donna!
The Open Studios of Washington County biennial makes their artist selections a year and a half before each tour date. The Call for Artists for the 2011 Tour took place last March, with the jury finalizing their selections last April.
You are invited to submit an application for the 2013 Open Studios. The Call to Artists is always advertised on the Open Studios website several months following the previous tour, which means 2013 applications would be accepted in the beginning of 2012.
Visit http://www.StudioTour.org for more information on the tour. Sue Sanderson is the person currently in charge of the jury process. You may email her and let het know you’re interested in the next tour: info@studiotour.org
The Open Studios also has a Facebook page where they would announce the next Call to Artists: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Greenwich-NY/Open-Studios-of-Washington-County-New-York/117566696437
